SUBJECT: Orca Waves Newsletter September 29, 2025

September 29th, 2025

Welcome back, !

It’s hard to believe that September is already drawing to a close. The school year is settling into a rhythm, and now October is right around the corner. With it comes the magic of fall - the crispness in the air, the vibrant colors of the leaves, the return of cozy sweaters, and of course, the pumpkin spice lattes we all know so well.

To help celebrate this wonderful season, your PTSA is thrilled to share that we have a Back-to-School Spooktacular planned for the entire school community. Our dedicated members are hard at work organizing an event filled with fun and excitement for families to enjoy together. We can’t wait to bring the spirit of the season alive with activities that highlight the joy, warmth, and creativity that fall inspires.

This truly is a special time of year - a season that reminds us to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and cherish the simple pleasures of being together as families and friends. As the days grow cooler and the evenings a little longer, may we all find moments of joy, laughter, and connection to carry us into this new season.

With gratitude,

Chris Jung

What is the Orca Waves Newsletter... And Why is it in My Inbox?

Orca Waves is a weekly newsletter created by the PTSA to keep the Alcott community informed, connected, and engaged. Each issue includes:

  • Upcoming Events & Activities – Stay up to date on school and PTSA events, volunteer opportunities, and family activities.

  • Important Announcements – Learn about programs, deadlines, and opportunities that directly impact your child’s school experience.

  • Community Highlights – Celebrate student and teacher achievements, classroom spotlights, and the vibrant culture that makes Alcott special.

  • Ways to Get Involved – Find simple, meaningful ways to support our school and strengthen our community.

Orca Waves ensures families never miss out on opportunities to engage with their child’s education, connect with other parents, and be part of the “village” that helps our children thrive.

PTSA Meeting & Family Movie Night

On Friday, the PTSA pulled off a double feature: our Fall General Membership Meeting and a Family Movie Night. Parents got the inside scoop on all the amazing programs and events the PTSA brings to our school, while the kids were perfectly happy with the real highlight - pizza and a showing of Elio in the gym.

Nearly 100 people came out to spend their Friday night with us (proof that PTSA + pizza really is the ultimate combo). Huge thanks to our board members who worked behind the scenes to keep everything running smoother than buttered popcorn - a special thank you to Nadiya for picking up 15 boxes of pizza and almost broke her car rushing back to school so the pizzas were still warm. And an extra, extra thank you to our fabulous Membership Team - Aloka, Panpan, and Alena - for organizing the whole evening.

Oh, and let’s not forget the tastiest part: thank you, Aloka, for treating families to your legendary chai!

Why Your Membership Matters

Dear Alcott Families,

Every year, your PTSA membership helps bring programs to life that enrich the educational experience of all our children. We warmly invite you to join the Alcott PTSA and continue making a difference in our school community.

Being a PTSA member means you are directly supporting the programs and events that make our school a vibrant and enriching place for every child. Membership dues fund enrichment opportunities in art, science, math, and STEAM - opportunities that simply would not exist without PTSA support. They also make possible the fun and memorable events our kids look forward to each year, such as the Back-to-School Bash, End-of-Year Party, classroom celebrations, the Science Fair, Culture Fair, and Family Movie Nights.

In addition, PTSA brings unique learning experiences to our students, like Science on Wheels from the Pacific Science Center, giving children hands-on opportunities that spark curiosity and creativity.

Your membership truly makes a difference in our children’s education. It also strengthens the PTSA, amplifying our collective voice as we advocate for the needs of students at the school, district, and state level. When you join, you are not only supporting events and programs - you are helping build a stronger, more connected school community for every child.

Without the support of members like you, these enriching opportunities simply wouldn’t be possible, and all of our children would feel the impact. That is why your membership truly matters.

The cost of the memberships are as follows:

  • Individual:  $25
  • Dual: $35

Please consider joining the PTSA today - together, we can ensure every child continues to learn, grow, and thrive.

Mondays 4-5pm | 9 Sessions | $225

This Persuasive Communication Bootcamp teaches the essentials of compelling communication through games and activities. Taught by the champion of Harvard University's 49th Annual Speech and Debate Tournament, students will learn how to form a thesis, research arguments, and use body language to effectively communicate their points of view. The course culminates in each student presenting the speech they have developed on the topic of their choice to fellow students, coaches, and parents at our showcase. Our camp's personalized instruction is designed to teach the power of persuasion, whether they are beginner or seasoned speakers.

Science Club (Grades 4-5) FULL

Mondays 4-5pm | 10 Sessions | $50

The Science Olympiad Club is an after-school program to facilitate students to explore the frontiers of science through hands-on challenges and tests, while learning the secrets of earth science and life science. We will be introducing topics from real Science Olympiad tournaments ranging from anatomy and astronomy to engineering and environmental science. So, bring your curiosity, your passion, and your team spirit. Let’s make science unforgettable.

Maybe you can't have an alligator as a pet at home, but you can definitely build one in our classroom at Snapology!
